Noori Chamb
Noori Chamb is a waterfall in the headwaters of the Poonch river in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated in Pir Panjals and is popular for a waterfall with historic importance and its natural surroundings. Located at a distance of around 45 km from Poonch, it is situated between Behramgala and Chandimarh which was one of the major heal thing camps of Emperor Jahangir and his successors. It is at a distance of 10 km from Bufliaz on right side of the historical Mughal Road.
Noori Chamb translates as "Noor's waterfall". Mughal Emperor Jahangir was a great lover of nature. According to locals, Mughal Emperor Jehangir admired the beauty of this waterfall so much that he named it as "Noori Aabshar" after his Queen Noor Jehan. And in the local dialect the name became famous as "Noori Chamb" as Chamb means water fall. It is said that Queen Noor Jehan during halt of caravan at this Parrao used to take bath in the pristine waters of this scenic waterfall and had a royal mirror fixed near the waterfall for viewing the same from her camping site, of which only the frame exists now. The stony frame in which a royal mirror was fixed narrates a part of romantic story of the queen with Emperor Jehangir. In the afternoons, both the King & Queen spent their time in the waters, where the public was barred from coming anyway near. The waterfall used to descend from around 100 feet earlier. Due to rock cutting and other natural changes the descend has shortened to just 75 feet. Still the beauty has not reduced one bit. There is a bridge constructed in front of the waterfall, which gives the tourists a beautiful view of this waterfall. There is a trail that leads to the mouth of the waterfall. This trail also takes visitors to an old temple situated nearby.
This waterfall sources its water from Luksar & Kolsar lakes of the Pir Panjal hills. Many locals call it a milky waterfall, due to the white coloured vapours formed during descend. The fall of the stream gives rise to dense clouds of water vapours which engulfs the area & spread all over.
Noori Chamb is the second tallest plunge waterfall in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. A large number of tourists visit the site of Noori Chamb Waterfall in summers to beat the sweltering heat in plains as the site is seated at an elevation of 3480 meters.
A tourist base camp is also connected with Noori Chamb for the convenience of nature lovers. An old cafeteria and a terrace is also available for tourists to have a glimpse of milky vapours of Noori Chamb. Tourist base camp is already connected with a small foot bridge towards Manhai forest area over Chitta Pani Stream from where the tourist would cross the stream and from the other side have a glimpse of beautiful Chandimarh glen and tourism base camp which has now taken the shape of a tourist village. This resort also cater the needs of travellers on Mughal road who stop at this place, have a cup of coffee, relax for a while and enjoy the beauty of glen while leading towards their destinations.
